How you can support people and pets facing homelessness this Christmas
Although pet ownership greatly enriches the lives of those who are homeless, it also comes at a significant financial cost. This is how you can help people who are struggling as well as their furry friends.

Every Christmas the Petbarn Foundation’s Tree of Hope Appeal raises money to save the lives of animals in need across Queensland.
This year they are partnering with Greencross Vets clinics to collect donations for Pets in the Park, a non-profit pet clinic which provides support to people who are experiencing homelessness to help them care for their companion pets.
Customers visiting the Toowoomba clinic can purchase a $3, $5 or $10 Christmas tree decoration, and every time a decoration is purchased, the Petbarn Foundation will also make a donation to Pets in the Park.
Chairman of the Petbarn Foundation Scott Charters said he encouraged people who visited the clinic during the holidays to participate in this great initiative.
“This small act of kindness goes such a long way in giving animals the love and care they deserve,” he said.
“By purchasing one of our Christmas tree decorations, our Greencross Vets clients and visitors are giving a gift that gives back to four legged-friends who need it most.
“This year has had a profound impact on communities across Australia and sadly our homeless community and their companions are doing it especially tough.”
CEO of Pets in the Park Eric Bickerton said the support provided a free health clinic for the homeless and their animal companions.
“These much-loved pets offer unconditional love, companionship, emotional support and security, those basic human needs that are often not met elsewhere,” he said.
“Although pet ownership greatly enriches the lives of those who are homeless, it also comes at a significant financial cost.
“Annual vaccinations, flea treatment, routine worming, and desexing and microchipping an animal costs hundreds of dollars.
“Donations made to the Tree of Hope Appeal will go a long way towards ensuring we can provide free health supplies and care for our most vulnerable in the months ahead.”
The Greencross Vet’s Tree of Hope Appeal is running from now until Sunday, December 27.
