Henry Winkler’s effortless charm was on full display the minute he stepped on the Empire Theatre sidewalk.
Instantly, he was greeting the crowd that had gathered to hear him speak at the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation’s Tilly’s Legend of their Game fundraiser on Saturday night.
The Hollywood star had just come from Australia Zoo where he hugged a koala and sat with a meerkat.
If he was tired, he didn’t show it and shook hands and posed for countless selfies.
While his minders tried to hurry him inside, there was no way to stop Winkler from showing how he earned the title of the ‘Nicest Guy in Hollywood’ as he shook the hand of every waiter, usher and barman in the building.
Foundation chief executive Alison Kennedy said it was an honour to have the Happy Days star in Toowoomba to help raise money for the nearby Darling Downs Health Regional Cancer Centre.
“The Foundation is about to embark on a really great journey,” Ms Kennedy said.
“We all know that there’s a new hospital coming, but alongside the build, we are going to create the most beautiful space in our Regional Cancer Centre
“We are aiming to raise $10m in the next two to five years.”
Ms Kennedy said money raised would be matched by a contribution from Queensland Health.
“The centre will be based at Baillie Henderson Hospital and it is going to be exactly what our community needs.”
