Garage to glam: Toowoomba’s best hairdresser revealed

We asked, you voted, and now your number one hairdresser has been revealed. Toowoomba’s best hairdresser started his business in his garage, and now owns his own stunning salon.

Robbie Verwey (Moore) has been a trendsetter from day one.

Born into a mining family in Biloela, Mr Verwey decided at a young age to divert away from his family’s mining background to become a hairdresser.

Now, barely a year after starting his own salon in Toowoomba, the senior hairdresser and owner of RMV Hair Studio has been named Toowoomba’s best hairdresser with a landslide number of votes from the community.

“RMV started in my garage through Covid when we went into lockdown,” Mr Verwey said.

“I have two kids so it was the best way to homeschool and still work and have an income.

“It grew very quickly and eight months later I needed a new space because my house was not big enough.”

In what was a difficult year for businesses in Toowoomba, Mr Verwey said they had come across their fair share of challenges, but had come out successful.

He said he wasn’t expecting the volume of support from the community.

“It is insane to know that there are so many salons with many stylists and I won,” he said.

“It’s crazy.”

The RMV Hair team currently consists of three hairdressers, including one apprentice and a hair extension specialist, and two eyelash technicians alongside Mr Verwey as the owner.

Along with his day job, Mr Verwey also works as Queensland’s brand ambassador for PAUL MITCHELL Australia and an educator for up-and-coming hairdressers.

Mr Verwey credits his success with his business to the way himself and his staff run a “comfortable” salon, open to everyone and anyone.

“We offer a beautiful luxury Environment but we offer different kind of experience.

“It’s professional but it’s very casual and friendly.

“I think it is so important because as soon as a client is comfortable with you you can let your colours shine.

“You can let everything you’ve learnt in hairdressing come alive.”
