A Toowoomba school is now home to a state-of-the-art performing arts centre and is currently hosting its first production on its grand stage.
The new Performing Arts Centre at Toowoomba State High School was completed last term, with an official opening set to be held later this year.
The $12 million double-storey centre includes a 500-seat theatre, state-of-the-art sound, lighting and audiovisual equipment, dedicated rehearsal rooms, and two dressing rooms with make-up counters and shower facilities.
It is also used for day-to-day classes with three dance and drama spaces, two music rooms, and two film, TV and media rooms.
There are living gardens throughout providing light and ambience to the student’s learning spaces.
It also has a fully equipped kitchen and canteen area with a sky-bridge connecting the students to the rest of school.
The school has been using the facility for the past few months and arts head of department Joey Dixon said it was an incredible asset for the school.
“Its phenomenal being in this new centre. It’s a place only schools could dream of having,” he said.
“The whole school community is so excited to be able to host our first performance here.”
The school’s production of Wizard of Oz is being held at the moment with the final productions Friday and Saturday.
Musical direction Tanya Luther said the production paid homage to the original story as well as incorporating a splash of “Lofty magic” to appeal to modern audiences.
“Traditionally, the roles of Scarecrow, Lion, Henry and Oz have been played by male performers however, the young women cast in these roles have certainly brought something extra special to these characters,” she said.
“Audio-visual effects, sophisticated and innovative costume and set design, and using a 3D printer for props have also contributed to the contemporary feel of this production.
“2021 has seen this performance venue changeover, a fitting evolution for the growth and strength of the performing arts within our school.
“While the Old Hall will forever be enriched with memories and tradition, the new facility holds the promise of future achievements.
“Musical theatre has that unique ability to bring pure enjoyment to children, teenagers and adults, whether they are performing onstage or through audience participation.
“I’m thrilled to have directed another musical here, it has been my absolute pleasure and privilege to work with such talented and dedicated students and staff over the last four and a half months.”
Wizard of Oz performances are being held Friday at 6.30pm and Saturday at 1.30pm and 6.30pm.
Tickets are available via the QKR app or cash at the door.
