Five senior high-school students from a local Toowoomba school featured a number of their designs over the weekend as part of the first Toowoomba Fashion Festival brought to you by Style Magazine at the Armitage Centre.
Fairholme College students Kristen Hurlock, Clare Hogan, Bella Donaldson, Katie Campbell and Caroline Armstrong had the opportunity to feature their Floral Clash collection on the emerging designers runway on Saturday afternoon.
Kristen and Clare described the collection as “bold, unique, romantic and flirtatious with a summer element”.
This was the second chance the students had to showcase their collection on the catwalk, designed at Fairholme College’s fashion week in October last year - where the students were assigned to clash at least three different floral designs alongside frills.
For Clare, fashion design was an outlet for her creativity and as a way to express herself.
She said she really enjoyed seeing all the different approaches and perspectives to fashion at the festival over the weekend.
She was also keen to learn more about sustainability in fashion, recognising the importance of “doing your part to design garments that keep longer and not end up in landfill”.
Kristen said she would love to pursue a career in fashion and during the festival loved watching what was happening behind the scenes and how it was organised.
Toowoomba Fashion Festival organisers Julz McBain and Christel Ryley said the festival ushered in a “cultural shift” for the city, and has been part of a growing push by local artists, designers and curators of fine art to make Toowoomba an art and cultural destination.
The event included more than 24 designers and fashion boutiques across three runways.
