Extra security measures and protocols at the upcoming Wellcamp quarantine facility outside Toowoomba will ensure a Howard Springs-style escape won’t occur.
That’s the message from Deputy Premier Steven Miles, who made the comments after three teens escaped from the Northern Territory facility that Wellcamp has been modelled after.
Mr Miles said the incident on Tuesday at Howard Springs, where three teenagers managed to escape the premises, would not likely be repeated at Toowoomba.
He said the hub will include on-site police, perimeter patrols and CCTV throughout the facility monitored all hours of the day.
“Wellcamp is Australia’s first purpose-built quarantine facility and its design and construction have taken into consideration lessons learned from the operation of other facilities used for quarantine,” Mr Miles said.
“Wellcamp has been designed and is being constructed to meet all necessary security requirements.
“A collaborative approach was taken to Wellcamp’s design with input across government agencies, technical advisers and Wagner Corporation.”
Wagner Corporation’s John Wagner, whose company is building the hub, declined to comment on the Howard Springs escape.
The hub’s first stage, made up of 500 beds, is expected to be finished by the end of the month.
