Costume store manager reveals most popular costumes

Customers at our local stores are reaching for costumes reminiscent of the global pandemic and local lockdowns for Halloween this year, says one store manager.

If Halloween costumes are a sign of the times we live in, then the costumes for this year’s celebrations are set to be more sickly than spooky.

The Party Hut manager Jane Mason said she has seen an influx of customers straying from the more traditional costumes and taking plague and biohazard masks, as well as hazmat suits off the shelves this year in light of the global pandemic that shut down Toowoomba.

Mrs Mason said business had been booming lately with customers looking for outfits for Halloween, and Book Week before that.

Despite many people reaching for virus-related costumes, the traditional outfits were still popular among customers young and old.

“People do some really clever, creative things with their makeup,” she said.

“Often people will buy hats and veils and then do a lot with their makeup.

“There’s also the kind of traditional costumes like the Addams Family, and the Mad Hatter is a really popular one.

“Breaking Bad this year has been popular this year.”

Toowoomba ready for the fright and delight of Halloween

Mrs Mason said many people were taking on traditional characters like Alice and Wonderland, but giving them a spooky edge.

She said one unique costume she had spotted was the “scary Teletubbies”.

The manager said one takeaway from Halloween this year was that you are never too young or old to get a little creative, and enjoy dressing up.
