Budding ballerina Penelope Josey, 6, has won an opportunity most little kids her age would dream of.

The Dalby local was one of four lucky children to win an opportunity to dance alongside Queensland Ballet Principal Artist Yanela Piñera through the QB Junior competition.

Penelope and the other winners will experience a repertoire class delivered by Ms Piñera at the home of the Queensland Ballet in West End.

QB Junior is a youth program run by the Queensland Ballet designed specifically for children aged six to 12, which teaches them the ballet basics and introduces them to the world of being a professional ballerina.

Penelope and her mum, Andrea will be making the trip from Dalby for the experience, which includes lunch after the class with Ms Piñera and the other winners.
“I feel so excited for Penelope,” Mrs Josey said.

“She loves ballet and to able to learn from a QB Principal Artist is such an amazing opportunity for her.

“I can’t wait to watch her learn and grow from this experience and share what she’s learnt with her friends.”

Ms Piñera said training young dancers was an important part of keeping the art alive.

“It’s so important to nurture and inspire the next generation of ballet lovers,” she said.

“QB holds Queensland close to its heart and is committed to providing enriching experiences for both our local and regional dancers.”

Ms Piñera began her ballet training in Cuba before moving to Australia and joining the Queensland ballet in 2015.

She has since starred in performances like Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, and The Sleeping Beauty.

Penelope said it was her dream to be a professional ballerina, and said she was most looking forward to making new friends.

Penelope and her mother will be travelling to Brisbane on March 27 for the opportunity of a lifetime.
