Australian country music star Lee Kernaghan is set to return to Toowoomba to play a free concert at Wellcamp Airport as part of the facility’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

The “Boy From the Bush” is the major drawcard at Wellcamp’s community event on Sunday November 10, which will mark a decade since it opened as Australia’s newest airport.

A winner of 38 Golden Guitars at the Country Music Awards (a record second only to Slim Dusty), Kernaghan has remained one of Australia’s biggest names in the genre for the best part of 30 years.

His appearance at the community fun day will be a delight for fans disappointed at the cancellation of this weekend’s Goombungee Country festival, for which Kernaghan was to be the headliner.

Event manager Hannah Evans said the team are thrilled for another opportunity to give back to the community and to showcase what the Toowoomba region is all about.

“Ten years of providing flights to the community at Wellcamp Airport is such a milestone and to engage with Lee [Kernaghan] who has been with us along that journey is just the icing on the cake to have such an iconic Australian talent attending,” Ms Evans said.

Wellcamp Airport general manager Kellie Banditt said the regional airport has big plans to build on connectivity to hubs and other intrastate ports, with its sights set on bringing more flights to the region.

“More flights for Toowoomba (that’s) our next milestone,” she said.

The community fun day will also include food trucks, a car show and shine, activities and games for kids and displays from emergency services like the Queensland Police, LifeFlight and the State Emergency Service.

Since its launch in 2014, Wellcamp Airport has seen more than 700,000 passenger movements and moved 11,000 tonnes of freight to and from Asia.
