Toowoomba shoppers take advantage of Boxing Day sales

THERE was just one word on everyone's lips yesterday during Boxing Day: sales.

THERE was just one word on everyone's lips yesterday during Boxing Day: sales.

Keen shoppers flooded into the city's biggest shopping centre, Grand Central, and its largest department store Myer to grab a heavily-discounted bargain and spend some of their Christmas money and gift cards.

Myer opened before the rest of the centre, with customers lining up in front of the store before the sale started at 8.30am.

Myer store manager Sophie Robertson was impressed with the amount of shoppers.

She said among the most popular items were homewares. Some items were reduced in price by up to 70 per cent.

"Of course fashion, footwear, a lot of our cosmetic sets have gone to clearance now as well, so there is some great value in them post-Christmas time," Ms Robertson said.

"Obviously a lot of customers come in with their gift cards they have received from Christmas which they are looking at spending.

"But realistically we have got some amazing offers in store."

Ms Robertson said while Myer's sale continued until January 28, many came along on Boxing Day to continue a post-Christmas shopping tradition.

"We have even got team members here that have said growing up in Toowoomba every single Boxing Day they have come into the store and shopped and now they are working for us so they get to see the other side of it," she said.

While she wasn't continuing a tradition, shopper Meg Zammit was keen to stock up on towels and had the approach of get in and get out.

With her family in tow and about 20 towels in hand, Ms Zammit made the most of yesterday's sales.

"I hate them with a passion," she said.

"(I came) just because we needed new towels and we knew that if we left them like I usually do, like two weeks, there will be nothing left so we thought we would get in early and get it done."

Shopper Jo Cope enjoyed more of a leisurely shopping day, but still took advantage of the discounts.

"Just while we had the chance we thought we would come out and get a few things that we have been thinking that we needed and good chance to do it on sale," she said.
