Two Gold Coast teens who hurled what was thought to be a can of urine at a passer-by on the Glitter Strip’s Oceanway footpath have been busted by cops.

Video of the incident went viral after it was posted to a southern Gold Coast community Facebook page earlier this week.

The two boys were captured laughing as they sped past the male pedestrian on the Oceanway at Coolangatta.

The man flinched and held his hands after being hit with the yellow liquid.

Police on Friday said they had identified the two culprits, aged 15 and 16, both from Tugun after an extensive investigation into the “disturbing” incident.

“Both attended the Palm Beach Police Beat with their guardians, where they took responsibility for their actions, expressed remorse, and acknowledged the impact of their behaviour,” a police spokesman said.

“Both teens were issued with Notices of Caution for public nuisance offences under the Summary Offences Act 2005. One teen also received two additional cautions for careless driving offences under the Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1995.”

Senior Sergeant Andrew Goldsworthy commended officers for their diligence in investigating the incident despite significant challenges, including the lack of a formal complaint and limited initial information.

“This was a complex investigation, but our officers showed outstanding commitment in tracking down those responsible and ensuring appropriate action was taken,” he said.

“Police have also spoken with the teenagers and their families about road safety and the dangers of improper e-bike use. They have been warned that any future offences will result in further enforcement action, including penalties for riding unregistered and unlicensed.”

Both boys are believed to be students at Palm Beach-Currumbin High.

Asked if any disciplinary action was being taken against the students involved, an Education Department spokeswoman said the incident happened late last year “outside of school grounds”.

“Any situation that threatens the safety and wellbeing of students, staff or others in our community is treated extremely seriously and dealt with as a matter of priority,” she said.

“The Department is unable to provide further details for privacy reasons.”

Sen-Sgt Goldsworthy urged the public to report incidents of anti-social behaviour directly to police.

“If you see something concerning, we encourage you to report it to police so we can investigate it properly,” he said.

Speaking at an e-bike town hall meeting last week convened by Youth Justice Minister Laura Gerber amid growing community outcry, Gold Coast police Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon said officers were struggling to control reckless young riders.
