Vardon Ave hotspot Exchange Coffee’s owner PJ Tebyanian can truly say “my cup runneth over” now that the East End institution has been named among the world’s best coffee shops.

The popular meeting place, which opened in 2013 and features in Oscar winner Olivia Colman latest film Jimpa, landed in 37th place on the inaugural The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops list.

It was launched at CoffeeFest Madrid in Spain.

Mr Tebyanian, who bought Exchange Coffee in September travelled to Madrid to receive the honour, said it was an “amazing achievement” to make the cut.

The cafe had been scrutinised anonymously by a judge acting as a “mystery shopper”, he said.

“We didn’t know (Exchange Coffee was in the running) until they messaged me … I thought it was a scam or something like that (at first),” he said.

Mr Tebyanian said his focus was the cafe’s ambience and consistent coffee and food

“We really focus on giving our customers a great experience,” he said, adding: “They feel very appreciated and we do appreciate them.”

Toby’s flagship cafe and roastery in Sydney’s Chippendale was No.1.

It and Exchange Coffee were among nine Australian coffee shops to make the top 100.

The list was compiled – and ranked – by public votes and evaluations by a panel of specialty coffee experts and industry professionals.

The Crown star Colman’s Jimpa had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 23.

It will also be part of the program at this year’s Adelaide Film Festival, which is scheduled for October.
