Plans to transform ageing, run-down hard courts in Hackham have been released – showcasing basketball, futsal and table tennis facilities in the $430,000 redevelopment.
The proposal by Onkaparinga Council, would turn four of Forsyth Reserve’s courts into “an amazing new play space” incorporating recreational opportunities for local kids.
On Monday, Mayor Moira Were told The Advertiser the redevelopment acknowledged the “deteriorating state” of the courts.
“The decision to repurpose the four courts reflects the fact they’re no longer required for organised sport, responding to changing community needs,” she said.
“We’re also keen to introduce nature play elements to encourage families to explore the nearby creek and connect with the natural world.”
The project will also incorporate a brand new learn-to-ride bike track, a variety of pavement games and will revert some of the area to irrigated turf.
Two of the hard courts on the southern end will be retained as community courts after they were recently recoated in May this year with additional line marking for tennis, netball, pickleball and hot shots.
Council paid tribute to the previous owners of the courts – the Hackham Tennis Club – which had occupied the site since 1980 but recently folded in 2022.
Construction is expected to be undertaken during the 2025-26 financial year.
Community engagement on the proposal is open until August 26.
