SA man killed in horror Western Highway crash near Ararat in regional Victoria

A South Australian man is among the dead after a B-double, two light trucks and two cars collided on a highway over the border on Wednesday.

A South Australian man was one of three people killed in a horror five-vehicle crash in regional Victoria on Wednesday.

A B-Double, two light trucks and two cars were all involved in the collision, which also claimed the lives of two Victorians.

Emergency services rushed to the Western Highway near the town of Armstrong, located between Ararat and Stawell about 12.30pm.

Two occupants of an Isuzu van – a 49-year-old male driver from Lyndhurst and 24-year-old female passenger from Clyde North – died at the scene, along with a 65-year-old South Australian male who was driving a Toyota Kluger.

A 63-year-old Horsham man, who was behind the wheel of the semi-trailer and the driver of a Volvo XC40, an 83-year-old Geelong woman, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A 52-year-old man from Corio, who was driving an Isuzu small truck, was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Victorian detective senior sergeant Paul Lineham of the Major Collision Investigation Unit said the scene of the crash was “absolute carnage”.

It is not yet known what caused the collision, which closed the highway, but police said investigations were ongoing.

Meanwhile, in a separate crash, a 66-year-old motorbike rider was rushed to hospital after a serious crash at Gawler Belt on Wednesday.

Police were called to the intersection of Horrocks and Thiele highways just before 2.30pm after a Holden station wagon and Husqvarna motorbike collided.

The motorbike rider, from Evanston Park, is currently in hospital in a serious condition.

A 55-year-old woman from Morgan has since been arrested and charged with dangerous driving causing serious harm and driving under suspension.

She was issued with an instant loss of license and bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on July 11.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
