Emergency services have rushed to Yatala Labour Prison shortly after 10.30am on Thursday morning in response to a fight between prisoners.

A Department of Correctional Services spokeswoman confirmed one of the prisoners involved was taken to hospital to be assessed.

“The Department can confirm that prisoners were fighting at Yatala Labour Prison this morning,” the spokeswoman said.

“As a result, one prisoner was taken to hospital and is being assessed.”

The initial emergency services call-out suggested a weapon may have been involved in the incident, with the spokeswoman declining to comment further.

The nature of the injuries to the prisoner is unknown.

It comes after a separate incident at the prison on Christmas Day, 2024, which left two inmates in hospital.

The two men were later released with “minor injuries” two days later.

Yatala prison has also made recent news for a separate homicide in 2023.

Benjamin Anthony Shuman, 34, was accused of murdering his cellmate Jason Douglas Wright, 52, on June 17, 2023 in their shared cell.

Mr Shuman was found not guilty on the grounds of being “mentally incompetent” by Justice Anne Bampton at the Supreme Court on February 24.
