Motorists in Adelaide’s south will soon be travelling quicker, smoother and safer when a newly installed bridge as part of the Main South Rd upgrade opens to traffic this week.

The newly installed Pedler Creek Bridge on Main South Rd at Seaford Heights will officially open on Friday.

Motorists will initially only be able to use the two eastern-side lanes of the new bridge – one lane travelling in each direction – with the other two lanes set to open by the end of the year.

The new bridge, which replaces the older two-lane bridge, is 161m long and 24m wide.

It’s a major plank in the 9.8km Main South Rd duplication project, stretching from Griffiths Dr, Seaford, to Port Rd, Aldinga.

The new bridge also includes a cyclist and pedestrian path to safely cross Main South Rd, which will open once all four lanes have been fully opened.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the duplication of Main South Rd and nearby Victor Harbor Rd was “85 per cent” complete.

“With summer just around the corner, that is great news for the thousands of holiday makers who will be heading to this stunning region over the coming months,” he said.

The new bridge is held up by 50 super-T support beams – each about 35m long and weighing up to 64 tonnes.

The existing bridge will be demolished in the coming weeks, with works expected to take two months.

The state and federal governments have jointly funded the $685m Main South Rd and Victor Harbor Rd duplication projects, which have supported about 945 full-time jobs.

Kaurna MLA Chris Picton said he was eager to see the new development fully open.

“This is great news for the community and will make a difference for residents who use the road for their daily commute, and for visitors to the region,” he said.
