The SANFL Women’s League is booming, with the competition doubling its AFLW draft selections in one year.
Last season a record 10 SANFLW players were selected at the draft, headlined by Glenelg’s Poppy Scholz going to Carlton at pick six and Sturt’s India Rasheed to Adelaide at No. 13.
So who are the next generation to watch?
While South Australia boasts four players in this year’s AFLW National Academy squad – Glenelg’s Eloise Mackereth, Central District’s Sophie Eaton, South Adelaide’s Lily Baxter and Sturt’s Monique Bessen – there are a host of other young guns making waves.
With the 2025 SANFLW season kicking off on Saturday, March 15, The Advertiser asked the eight club coaches to nominate their most exciting players aged 23 and under – many who are on the radar of AFLW clubs.
Here are the top 50, listed in alphabetical order.
KATE ALEXANDER
(Norwood)
Ruck, 16, 183cm
“Kate’s only 16 but she did an amazing job last season rucking against players a lot older than her, finishing fourth in the league for hit-outs (with 305). She is only going to get better and I have no doubt that she has improved with the hard work she’s put in during the off-season. In our match simulation she has taken some massive contested marks and used the ball really well. You can almost be certain that we’ll only have her for another couple of years before she’s drafted. I think she’ll go pretty high in the draft too because she’s going to be a star for a long time.’’ – Norwood coach Brad Ferrall.
MEL ANDERSON
(South Adelaide)
Half-forward, 19, 174cm
“Mel is really powerful, fast and strong and has a real ability to win the hard ball. She will run through brick walls for you and was unlucky not to get drafted at the end of last year. She’s a very attacking player who will play as a high half-forward for us and I’m sure she has the attributes to be an AFLW player.’’ – South coach Rick Watts.
MIKAYLAH ANTONY
(Central District)
Defender, 17, 169cm
“Mikayla debuted for us at senior level last year and was included in the state under-18s program. She has become a really good defender and has really grown during the pre-season. She has already become a leader for us, which is amazing for someone so young. She can play on talls and smalls and float around the backline, where she can use her great intercept marking ability to advantage and run off the half-back line.’’ – Central coach Ben Hunt.
SHAE ARCHBOLD
(South Adelaide)
Forward, 18, 168cm
“Shae is a natural goalkicker, a genuine finisher. She kicked a goal in our grand final win (against Norwood) and has sealed many games for us with her amazing left foot. She is working off some injuries in the past two years, which probably stopped her from getting drafted, but with some continuity we see her as a future AFLW player because she’s such a classy goalkicker with a natural eye for goal.’’ – South coach Rick Watts.
RUBY BALLARD
(West Adelaide)
Small forward/midfielder, 18, 156cm
“Ruby’s contested work and ability to win the ground-ball is outstanding. She is also an excellent kick and great decision maker. Ruby is so effective that we benefit greatly every time she touches the footy. She makes things happen for us. Ruby usually plays that high half-forward role, so she has been more of an assist player than a goalkicker but we’re trying to get her to hit the scoreboard more often this season.’’ – West coach Bruce Dawes.
EMILY BARTSCH
(Norwood)
Key defender, 21, 173cm
“I think we would have won last year’s SANFLW grand final (against South Adelaide) if Bartschy didn’t miss the game with a syndesmosis injury. Her ability to compete one-on-one is incredible. She just doesn’t get beaten. She played on one of the competition’s leading goalkickers, South’s Emily Brockhurst, twice last year and kept her goalless. She also held the league’s leading goalkicker, Central’s Katelyn Rosenzweig, goalless when we played them away while kicking a goal on her. She is close to being the best key defender in the competition and is certainly a weapon for us. If anything, I think she might even go to a new level this season by being able to intercept and be more attacking across half-back.’’ – Norwood coach Brad Ferrall.
LILY BAXTER
(South Adelaide)
Wing, 18, 173cm
“A member of the AFLW National Academy squad, Lily has moved from a forward role to the wing as she continues to develop her game. In last year’s grand final she played a big role tagging Norwood’s wingers, which was really good for her development, and she’ll be a key player for us this season. Lily is silky smooth and a dead-eye in front of goal, rarely missing. She’s that deadly around goal that she has won us three or four games off her own boot in the past couple of years. Lily reads the play really well, is an elite user of the ball by hand and foot and she runs all day.’’ – South coach Rick Watts.
CANDICE BELBIN
(Norwood)
Midfielder, 20, 163cm
“She came across to us from Tasmania and it took her a little while to find her feet but once she did she was outstanding, finishing fourth in our best and fairest and winning our best first-year player award. Candice was Tassie’s under-18s captain a couple of years ago and is unbelievably hard at the contest. Her pressure, workrate and selfless acts are through the roof. She does an outstanding job for us with her ability to be so hard at the contest and her selflessness.’’ – Norwood coach Brad Ferrall.
MONIQUE BESSEN
(Sturt)
Midfielder/forward, 18, 171cm
“Monique is a member of this year’s AFLW National Academy squad and made the 2024 The Advertiser SANFLW Team of the Year. She is entering her draft year and is super clean in winning the ground ball in congestion. She is an excellent user of the ball who makes good decisions with it and she has a terrific workrate, which enables her to have an exceptional ability to cover the ground as a midfielder from the defensive end to forward end. Her endurance numbers are great. Monique debuted at league level at 15 and we are excited to see what she can do in her draft year.’’ – Sturt coach Michael O’Connor.
TAHLITA BUETHKE
(Norwood)
Wing/half-back, 23, 170cm
“Tahlita made the 2024 The Advertiser SANFLW Team of the Year as a half-back but she is very versatile and will play a fair bit on the wing for us. She reads the play unbelievably well, has real leg speed and makes great decisions. She can intercept the ball and then make things happen with ball in hand to open the game up for us. Tahlita’s game really suits our attacking style.’’ – Norwood coach Brad Ferrall.
EMMA CHARLTON
(South Adelaide)
Small forward, 16, 160cm
“Emma will eventually play through the midfield but at the moment she’ll play mainly forward for us, particularly as she works through her shin splints. Like her sister, Teah, (Adelaide Crows), she is electric around goal and just makes things happen. Like our other 15-year-olds last season, she found her feet at the level and I think she’s going to explode this year.’’ – South coach Rick Watts.
JULIA CLARK
(North Adelaide)
Midfielder, 22, 163cm
“Our reigning best and fairest and a powerhouse through the midfield, Julia was a model of consistency in 2024 and with the retirement of some key players, she will be crucial to our success in 2025. Julia will be a general in the midfield and with her skills on either side of her body, will look to deliver the ball to our forwards and create plenty of inside 50s. She was a member of the SA state team last season and will look to retain her position this year..’’ – North coach Kelly Barltrop.
APRILLE CROOKS
(North Adelaide)
Midfielder/utility, 21, 170cm
“A Tasmanian import who is heading into her third SANFLW season, Aprille displays plenty of dash off half-back and uses her speed to great effect. A good user of the “don’t argue’’ technique, she can bust open a pack or break a tackle and hit a forward target lace out. While likely to start in the midfield, don’t be surprised to see her burst forward and kick a goal or two and enjoy a hearty celebration. Aprille was a member of the 2024 under-23 state team and has been invited to train with the Adelaide Crows in recent years. Watch out for the flashy No. 10 in 2025.’’ – North coach Kelly Barltrop.
TESSA DAVIS
(Glenelg)
Defender, 17, 175cm
“Tessa hasn’t played football since 2022 due to cricket commitments, international flag football and an unfortunate ACL injury but she has returned and been put straight back into the SA under-18 squad – for good reason. She plays with sharp football IQ and composure and has a sweeping left-foot kick. Her ability to read the play and intercept marking is a highlight of her game. We expect Tessa to play a key role in our backline this season.’’ – Glenelg coach Talia Radan.
ASHA DUFOUR
(Glenelg)
Midfielder/forward, 18, 171cm
“We were very excited to acquire Asha to Glenelg (from West Adelaide) in the off-season. We know she had a very strong 2024 as an SA under-18 player and is unlucky not to be on an AFLW list. Asha’s work rate and athleticism on the outside of the contest, prowess in front of goal and commitment to being the best footballer she can be will allow her to demonstrate her strengths as a midfielder-forward for us this season.’’ – Glenelg coach Talia Radan.
SOPHIE EATON
(Central District)
Midfielder, 17, 170cm
“Sophie probably found it a little bit tough last year in her second season of senior footy but as the season went on we started to play her more on a wing and on-ball (after starting as a forward) and she started to get confidence that she was good enough to play at the level. Her pre-season has been unreal. She is super-fit, an elite runner who broke our club record for our 1.5km time trial, which has since been smashed again. She even ran a marathon over summer. Her kicking skills are elite and we’re expecting a big year from her.’’ – Central coach Ben Hunt.
LAELA EBERT
(North Adelaide)
Defender/midfielder, 18, 165cm
“The Ebert name is synonymous with the SANFL and Laela (the daughter of former North men’s player Daniel Ebert) has exceptional skills by hand and foot. She will be a key part of our defence with her ability to read the play, allowing her to intercept opposition (inside-50) entries and rebound from the defensive 50, hit a target up the ground and quickly turn defence into offense. Laela was selected on a half-back flank in the 2024 The Advertiser SANFLW Team of the Year and was runner-up in North’s best and fairest. She is in our leadership group this year.’’ – North coach Kelly Barltrop.
MIYU ENDERSBY
(Central District)
Key position/ruck, 16, 179cm
“Miyu debuted for us last year and can play a variety of key position roles for us – in defence, ruck or up forward, which is awesome. Being so young, last year was a really good learning experience for her. She is part of the state (under-18s) program, which is terrific for her and her learning, and has got another solid pre-season under her belt, so I can see her taking her game to another level this year. She is very coachable and will be one to really keep an eye out for this season.’’ – Central coach Ben Hunt.
MARLIE FIEGERT
(Woodville-West Torrens)
Midfielder/forward, 19, 168cm
“Marlie’s changed her guernsey number from 30 to 17 this season, which is the number her dad, Nigel, wore at Port Adelaide. She has taken her strength to the next level over pre-season, with no-one being able to stop her in and around the stoppages. She has also worked really hard on her forward craft, so she’ll play as a midfielder/forward for us this season. Marlie has the ability to go forward and kick a couple of snags.’’ – Eagles coach Narelle Smith.
GEORGIE FIELDER
(Glenelg)
Wing/midfielder, 16, 168cm
“Georgie is coming off an All-Australian under-16 selection last season – a year where she made her league debut, playing five senior games. She backs up her talent with a drive to be the best player she can be. Georgie is in the top couple of runners in our squad, possessing an outstanding work rate. She is clean by foot, makes excellent decisions when under pressure and has great awareness and intuition with ground positioning.’’ – Glenelg coach Talia Radan.
MAIA FREEMANTLE
(Woodville-West Torrens)
Midfielder/forward, 15, 166cm
“Maia is an incredibly strong athlete who can play as an inside and outside midfielder and also go forward and make an impact. She has put on some size with our weights program and is athletically developing really quickly. She isn’t that tall but aerially she plays above her height. Maia reminds me of (Port Adelaide’s) Shineah Goody (last season’s AFLW best first-year player winner) with the way she goes about things. She’s a very good young player.’’ – Eagles coach Narelle Smith.
JADE HALFPENNY
(Norwood)
Midfielder, 22, 176cm
“Jade has returned from Carlton after being an AFLW injury replacement player in our off-season and is coming off an outstanding SANFLW season when she won our best and fairest and made The Advertiser SANFLW Team of the Year. We used her as a ruck, forward and mid because she can play anywhere and in the end we settled on her as a mid and she became a beast in there contested-wise and was able to hurt every other side. Jade will play as a mid again this season.’’ – Norwood coach Brad Ferrall.
CHARLI HAZELHURST
(Norwood)
Midfielder/defender, 17, 176cm
“Charli is just so powerful and strong in a contest. She is key position size but moves like a midfielder. She is a competitive beast who will give second, third and fourth efforts. Charli is off the charts with her competitiveness. Her ability to compete in the air and on the ground for someone her size is as good as I’ve seen from someone her age. She is incredibly fit and hard working and is an all-round sportsperson who is also in the Australian under-19 netball squad, which shows how talented she is.’’ – Norwood coach Brad Ferrall.
EMMA KILPATRICK
(West Adelaide)
Wing/half-back/half-forward, 18, 167cm
Emma was unlucky not to get drafted at the end of last year and, given her flexibility, she will play various roles for us this season. She finished in the top five of our best and fairest last year and has had another huge pre-season, beating her personal bests in time trials. She has a great leg, is an absolute competitor and has become an elite runner.’’ – West coach Bruce Dawes.
GEORGIA KING
(Sturt)
Forward, 19, 173cm
“Kingy is a nice left-footer who is a hybrid height as a forward. She is a really good contested mark, either one-versus-one or in a contested pack scenario. She is strong and a really good softballer as well who has worked hard on her forward craft. Apart from being a fine mark, she is very competent at ground level. Kingy was a defender coming through the juniors but last year she really made her mark as a forward, showing an ability to not only hit the scoreboard but also apply plenty of forward line pressure on opposition defenders.’’ – Sturt coach Michael O’Connor.
KIANA LEE
(Norwood)
Wing, 22, 174cm
“Kiana was close to being the best player in the competition in the second half of last season. She is an unbelievable ball user and contested mark and makes really good decisions with the footy. She played on the wing last season but still finished as the league’s third leading goalkicker (with 19), which shows how she can hurt teams on the scoreboard. She’ll play a combination of wing and forward this season.’’ – Norwood coach Brad Ferrall.
TARA LORD
(Central District)
Midfielder/defender, 16, 174cm
“She’s a tall, very versatile player who potentially could ruck. But we see her most value for us playing as an on-baller or down back. Tara was an elite softballer who debuted for us last year. She has now switched her focus more to football and has had a massive pre-season. She is super fit and that has shone out with the way she has trained and played in our match simulation. She is hard at it and has good skills and we expect her to have a breakout year.’’ – Central coach Ben Hunt.
RUBY LYNCH
(Woodville-West Torrens)
Key forward/ruck, 16, 181cm
“Ruby is a tall left-footer who is very agile for her size. She has a basketball background and is really balanced and composed in traffic. We expect her to spend the majority of her time playing forward and helping out in the ruck. She will be hard for opponents to match up on because of her height, agility and pace. Ruby is also a very good contested mark.’’ – Eagles coach Narelle Smith.
EMILY MABLESON
(West Adelaide)
Half-back, 16, 170cm
“Emily played every league game for us last season as a 15-year-old when she wasn’t playing state under-16s. She was named as SA’s MVP of the national carnival and All-Australian captain, which shows how talented she is. She is just a raw talent who works so hard on her game. She will play mainly off half-back for us, has good skills, is super coachable and will only get better as she grows. Emily is a super exciting prospect.’’ – West coach Bruce Dawes.
ELOISE MACKERETH
(Glenelg)
Forward, 17, 175cm
“Eloise is coming off an All-Australian under-18 selection last season (named in the forward pocket) as a bottom-age player. She is a supremely talented forward who plays taller than her listed height, with strong marking ability and a terrific vertical jump. She is an accurate kick for goal and her agility once the ball hits the ground is difficult to match up on, providing a key point of difference. Eloise is very coachable and driven to learn.’’ – Glenelg coach Talia Radan.
CHARLOTTE MAURITS
(Central District)
Midfielder/forward, 15, 170cm
“We have brought Charlotte up from our under-age program this season and just before Christmas she smashed Sophie Eaton’s new 1.5km time trial club record. She is a super fit athlete who has elite game sense and knowledge. Charlotte is in SA’s under-16 Girls Academy and I’ve been super-impressed with the way she has gone about things. Charlotte is a left-footer and while she is so young I’m pretty confident she’ll be able to make the step up to league footy this season.’’ – Central coach Ben Hunt.
TAYA MAXWELL
(South Adelaide)
Ruck/midfielder, 16, 185cm
“Taya was our back-up ruck last year and as a 15-year-old broke into our senior team and was almost best on ground in our grand final win (against Norwood). While she is primarily a ruck, Taya will probably spend some time as a midfielder this year, which is incredible. She is strong, powerful and can kick the footy 50 metres with her natural right foot and probably 40 metres with her left. She is the absolute future of the AFLW and we are really excited about what she could do this year.’’ – South coach Rick Watts.
LUCY MOORE
(Woodville-West Torrens)
Midfielder, 16, 163cm
“Lucy is an inside mid who has taken her game to the next level in regards to contests. As far as stoppage work and bodywork is concerned, she is insanely strong for a 16-year-old. Lucy isn’t overly tall but she will be really hard to match up on for opponents because of her size and strength. She is a rocket.’’ – Eagles coach Narelle Smith.
BAILEY MURRAY
(North Adelaide)
Defender/midfielder, 17, 160cm
“Bailey made her senior debut for us as a 16-year-old in Round 7 last season and is a no-fuss player who will sacrifice her game to stop her opponent’s influence. Used primarily in defence last year, her role will be even more important this season due to a changing backline. Bailey shows great composure, uses the ball with great efficiency and makes good decisions leaving the defensive 50.’’ – North coach Kelly Barltrop.
KLAUDIA O’NEILL
(Woodville-West Torrens)
Key forward, 18, 176cm
“Klaudia is a big, strong, powerful athlete who has enjoyed an outstanding pre-season. We played her behind the ball last year to get a bit of confidence before pushing her forward late in the season and she has been in some unbelievable pre-season form. She is so strong, runs through packs and take some great contested marks.’’ – Eagles coach Narelle Smith.
KIAHNI RUSSELL
(Glenelg)
Midfielder/forward, 20, 169cm
“Kiahni’s rise in the off-season has been incredible to watch. Her dedication to strength and conditioning has resulted in a significant improvement in her athletic profile and running ability. She has great foot skills, football IQ, composure under pressure and a constant drive to get better. Kiahni shows skill as a genuine midfielder-forward. She leads with her actions and her teammates have recognised this by voting her into the 2025 leadership group.’’ – Glenelg coach Talia Radan.
ESTHER SCHIRMER
(South Adelaide)
Key defender, 18, 177cm
“Esther was probably the unluckiest girl in Australia not to get drafted at the end of last year as AFLW clubs focused on forwards and midfielders. She was named at full back in the 2024 AFL under-18 girls All-Australian team and the SANFLW Team of the Year and is just a hardworking, honest defender who has been the best SANFLW key defender of the past two years. She is so reliable and should dominate the competition again this year before eventually being drafted.’’ – South coach Rick Watts.
GEORGIA SWAN
(Sturt)
Forward/midfielder, 21, 170cm
“Georgia is an elite ball user who has great finesse with her kick. She was a train-on player with the Crows this year after spending two years as a train-on with Port, which has helped build her fitness base in the off-season. She is a power athlete in terms of one-versus-one strength but she also has some really good outside attributes in terms of her disposal efficiency.’’ – Sturt coach Michael O’Connor.
SOPHIE THREDGOLD
(Sturt)
Defender/midfielder, 17, 167cm
“Sophie’s a power athlete who possesses a really good turn of speed. She has done a huge amount of work over the pre-season to build up her endurance and has added some muscle as well. Sophie has great ability to break the lines from half-back and gain some territory for us, which will be really important for us. We will probably give her a little burst through the midfield at times to add to her game as part of her development. Aerially she competes really well one-on-one too, which enables her to intercept the ball from half-back and move it forward.’’ – Sturt coach Michael O’Connor.
CHLOE TONKIN
(West Adelaide)
Key forward/ruck, 17, 183cm
“Chloe will play mainly as a key forward for us and slide into the ruck occasionally. She has a great set of hands and is entering her draft year, so she is doing everything she possibly can to give herself the best opportunity to be drafted. Apart from having fantastic hands, she is constantly working on her goalkicking and is super strong. She physically moves people, so she can make contests out of nothing and she has a great attitude. We’re really looking forward to seeing what Chloe can do this season.’’ – West coach Bruce Dawes.
DJIMILA TOTHAM
(North Adelaide)
Midfielder/forward, 22, 166cm
“Djimila had a breakout 2024, playing all 14 league games and finishing fourth in our best and fairest award. Her strengths include slick skills below her knees, tenacious tackling and having the ability to break out of stoppages. This season will see Djimila continue to develop through the midfield and look to create numerous scoring opportunities through her clearance work.’’ – North coach Kelly Barltrop.
HOLLY TRALLAGAN
(Central District)
Defender, 17, 172cm
“Holly played for us in 2023 before having last season off. She has returned, trained really well and, being a bit older, has shown a better understanding of the game and the requirements that are needed at this level. She is hard at it and is one who I believe that if she plays some good footy early on she will be included in the state (under-18s) program because she has been a part of those programs before..’’ – Central coach Ben Hunt.
IMOGEN TRENGOVE
(Woodville-West Torrens)
Utility, 17, 165cm
“She is in her draft year and is so versatile that she can play just about anywhere. Imogen is very, very fast. Her speed is her number one attribute. She has just finished Year 12 and returned to training in great nick. We played Imogen off half-back last year but she can play back, mid, wing, forward, wherever we need her, which gives us some great flexibility.’’ – Eagles coach Narelle Smith.
POLLY TURNER
(North Adelaide)
Forward/midfielder, 17, 178cm
“Polly is a genuine star in the making who has been on North’s radar for years. She made last year’s under-16 All-Australian team and has now committed to football (after also being a standout basketballer). Well built and possessing a great mark and kick to match, Polly (daughter of former Rooster and inaugural Crows squad member Peter Turner) can play at either end of the ground but she is also very adept at winning a loose ground ball in the midfield and or even playing in the ruck if required. She is a multidimensional player who is as versatile as they come. 2025 will be an exciting season for the 17-year-old, who we expect to debut in Round 1.’’ – North coach Kelly Barltrop.
ZOE VENNING
(West Adelaide)
Midfielder, 21, 169cm
“Zoe made the 2024 SANFLW Team of the Year and has a really sound knowledge of our game plan and structure. She is a leader, super consistent, a real accumulator of the ball and has great fitness. In fact she gets fitter and fitter every year, which is a testament to her desire and work ethic. Zoe has the rare ability to always seem to be in the right spot at the right time.’’ – West coach Bruce Dawes.
LAYLA VIZGAUDIS
(South Adelaide)
Midfielder, 16, 162cm
“Layla broke into our midfield team late last season as a 15-year-old after starting the season as a forward. This year she will be purely a midfielder who can play a bit of inside and outside for us. She is fast, an elite kick, reads the play really well and applies great pressure on the opposition. Even though she’s pretty small, Layla is really strong and courageous.’’ – South coach Rick Watts.
TAHLIA WALKER
(Sturt)
Defender/midfielder, 21, 170cm
“She has a good turn of speed and has gone from originally being a forward for us to being a playmaking half-back, with her ability to read the game, intercept, press and use the ball going forward really standing out for us last year. Tahlia is a really well balanced kick as well, with good penetration. Her run and carry and fine execution of her kick gives us some really good territorial gains from half-back. Pound for pound she is strong and, in terms of her development, she might also find herself getting some midfield time as an inside mid this season.’’ – Sturt coach Michael O’Connor.
ZARA WALSH
(Sturt)
Forward, 19, 174cm
“Zara is returning from an ACL injury and won’t be available until Round 3 or 4 but she is a highly-talented player who possesses a lot of speed as a forward. She is that hybrid height where she can play as a tall or small and her big weapons are her speed, running patterns, marking ability in one-on-one contests and good goal sense. We are looking forward to having her back and adding some speed and size to our team.’’ – Sturt coach Michael O’Connor.
LUCY WAYE
(West Adelaide)
Forward/midfielder, 17, 165cm
“This is Lucy’s first eligible draft year and to her credit she had a really big off-season and returned to training really fit. She has great leg speed and her skills are very sound. Importantly, Lucy hits the scoreboard and we are hoping she can continue to do that. She will play mainly forward and roll through the midfield ar times.’’ – West coach Bruce Dawes.
MATILDA WILMORE
(Glenelg)
Forward, 17, 164cm
“Matilda played 11 league games for Glenelg in 2024 as a junior but we expect her to take her game to the next level this season, with improved running capacity and taking on more responsibility in our group with confidence. She has really started to grow and has been one of our most consistent performers in match simulation over pre-season. Matilda has speed, burst, power and strength in and around the contest.’’ – Glenelg coach Talia Radan.
