A pervert who secretly filmed a woman and a child on separate occasions claimed it’s because he has an interest in voyeurism.

A creep who secretly filmed a woman and a child on separate occasions and can be heard breathing heavily in the video did so to “reduce his anxiety”, a court has heard.

Mathew Kayne Rutgers, 39, awaits his fate from custody with his lawyer claiming his offending stemmed from his interest in voyeurism.

A victim impact statement was read to the District Court on Wednesday, with the woman Rutgers indecently filmed saying she was left with anxiety and anguish.

“Whenever I remember this whole situation I am overwhelmed by a profound feeling of sadness and disrespect,” she said.

“I wouldn’t wish this situation on anyone in the world,”

A prosecutor told the court Rutgers’ indecent filming offences involved him secretly filming an adult woman.

The court heard the second victim was a child, who he also surreptitiously filmed.

The court heard some of the videos were shaky and there was “heavy breathing” from Rutgers in the videos, which could draw the inference that he was masturbating.

Rutgers pleaded guilty to multiple counts of producing child exploitation material and indecent filming.

The court heard Rutgers was sentenced in 2014 for indecent behaviour and unlawfully on premises after he looked into a separate victim’s window while masturbating.

Matthew Mead, for Rutgers, told the court his client grew up in Port Pirie and worked as a telecommunications technician before losing the job once he was charged.

Mr Mead said a psychiatrist was of the view that Rutgers doesn’t have any interest in children but rather an interest in voyeurism.

“When he offends in this manner it has the effect of reducing his anxiety,” he said.

“He then goes through a process of feeling shame and remorse.”

The court heard Rutgers was “very motivated” to seek treatment for his offending.

Judge Rauf Soulio will sentence Rutgers, who is in custody, in June.
