A Port Lincoln father who is facing drugs charges in Bali has been crying in jail and told his lawyer he regrets his actions.

Troy Smith was allegedly caught with 3.19g of methamphetamine in a four-star Legian resort, north of Kuta, on April 30 and is facing 12 years in jail, if convicted.

About noon Friday, his lawyer Edward Pangkahila said Mr Smith was “stressed” and had been “crying”.

“He’s very sorry and he’s not meaning to do this,” Mr Pangkahila said.

The lawyer said police would not “interrogate” his client on Friday, he would be questioned further on Monday.

Mr Pangkahila, said Mr Smith’s wife Tracy Smith was still in a state of “panic” and was expected to visit her husband next on Monday.

He said Ms Smith was unaware her husband, who she became engaged to in October last year and married in December, took drugs.

“She cried in the police station when she found out,” Mr Pangkahila said.

The father-of-two came to the attention of local police when customs found a parcel allegedly containing 3.15g of meth hidden in a Colgate toothpaste tube, that indicated it contained lubricant, addressed to Mr Smith from a friend in Cairns.

This sparked a police raid of his hotel room where .04g of meth as well as a bong and lighter were allegedly found.

Speaking at a press conference at the Port Lincoln Hospital on Friday morning, Premier Peter Malinauskas said the allegations against Mr Smith “beggars belief”.

“We’re not engaged as a state government, but I understand the commonwealth is seeking to provide consular assistance to the gentleman concerned,” Mr Malinauskas said.

“The allegations are serious in nature – they would be serious in Australia, but particularly serious in Bali.

“Whenever we hear these stories or reports, it makes you wonder what people are thinking.

“It seems all too frequent that there are allegations against Aussies with illicit substances in places like Indonesia. It’s clearly not a practice that is wise, and really beggars belief.

“These are serious allegations and I’m sure they’ll be worked through in the proper channels.”

The Advertiser spoke to several locals in Port Lincoln, who confirmed Mr Smith had not lived in the area since 2022.

That year, Mr Smith took to social media platform TikTok to document his new life in Queensland; sharing videos from his hotel rooms, to locals on the street.

He also shared new experiences finding snakes in canals in Cairns, and posted about the frightening weather differences.

More recently, Mr Smith shared a tribute to his new wife Tracy in January this year, saying he “never thought he’d love again”.

“I’ve had an interesting last twelve years,” Mr Smith says in the video.

“Chronic alcoholic, absolutely hit rock bottom. You couldn’t have drunk any more than me.

“I didn’t see any way out and I probably should be dead to be honest. Kids don’t speak to me anymore.

“But then in the most bizarre of circumstances, in a Tinder meeting I met this girl in Nairobi and I’ve since been to Bali.

“Now I’m loving life. This girl gives me motivation to do everything. She’s my life now.”

Just three days ago, his new wife Tracy posted a video of him on a scooter in Bali, with the caption “my husband, my life forever”.

The Advertiser understands Mr Smith’s children and ex-partner, also from Port Lincoln, are no longer in communication with him.

Locals have expressed their shock at the allegations, but said drugs were a common issue not just in the region, but across the country.

“I’ve lived here a long time and didn’t recognise his name, but drugs are rampant everywhere. It sounds like something that could happen anywhere,” one woman said.
