A Port Lincoln father-of-two is in a Bali prison cell after being arrested for allegedly carrying illicit drugs while enjoying a luxury holiday with his wife.
Troy Smith and his new wife Tracy were enjoying their trip in Bali’s top hotel and pool bars when police came knocking on their door last week.
Mr Smith has been charged with possessing 3.15g of methamphetamine and if found guilty, is likely to face a lengthy stint behind bars, 7NEWS reported.
It comes after he was arrested last Thursday in Canggu and brought to the Bali Police Headquarters in Denpasar to be interrogated by officers.
His wife was arrested also, but has since been released without charge.
The crime under Indonesia’s strict anti-drug laws carries a jail term of 4-12 years.
Meanwhile, their trafficking laws are punishable by death.
Mr Smith’s lawyer said he is suffering from a drug addiction and will push for a term in a rehabilitation centre instead of prison if found guilty.
In the meantime, Mr Smith will remain behind bars.
Previously, Mr Smith worked as a fisherman in Port Lincoln and the lower Peninsula Council.
Local Indonesian media has reported details of a raid by the anti-narcotics squad of the Indonesia National Police on a villa in Canggu last week.
It is not clear if this raid was related to the arrest Mr Smith.
In that separate raid, ecstasy pills and marijuana was allegedly produced at the house.
Jansen Panjaitan, a spokesman for the Bali Regional Police, told Indonesia’s Antara news agency that evidence found at the villa was being tested including possible tools used in narcotic preparations.
He also said that three “foreign nationals” were detained along with drug evidence during the raid.
“We have an active investigation including the evidence,” he said.
“We are waiting for the results from our lab just to make sure. Those in custody are still under interrogation.”
