The hero who brought down another man alleged to have assaulted a mother in Rundle Mall is a big Port Adelaide fan. And now the Power and the Premier want to honour his heroics.
Sangha Chau has gained hero status after vision emerged of a perfectly executed hip-and-shoulder stopped an alleged offender in Rundle Mall on Sunday afternoon.
Mr Chau, a dad-of-two, sprung into action when a 43-year-old mother from North Adelaide was allegedly chased and struck.
7NEWS revealed Mr Chau’s bump was inspired by former Port Adelaide star Byron Pickett, known for his hard-hitting ways.
FIVEAA breakfast radio host David Penberthy then reached out on Thursday morning to Port Adelaide chairman David Koch, explaining the man at the centre of the heroics was a massive Port fan. Kochie responded promptly, inviting Mr Chau and his family to Port Adelaide’s first home game’s president’s function. He will also organise Mr Chau to meet the players and the man himself, Byron Pickett.
Soon after, Premier Peter Malinauskas joined the party, texting Penberthy with another footy gift.
“I got a text from the Premier … he said ‘Dave I’ll sort Sangha and his family out with a box for the Port Hawthorn game in Gather Round, what a legend and a Byron Pickett fan to boot,” Penberthy said.
Mr Chau’s brother Suasday Chau spoke to FIVEAA and the martial arts specialist said the whole Chau family “knows how to fight”.
He said the family was of Cambodian heritage and had immigrated to SA decades ago.
“Both our parents fled Pol Pot and met in a refugee camp in Thailand … I was born there and so was Sangha, then we immigrated to South Australia and been here since, so 30, 40 years now.”
The incident occurred as Mr Chau was sitting with his family in the mall watching buskers on Sunday before he heroically hip-and-shouldered the alleged offender.
“I saw the guy coming, by the time I knew we were pretty close, so I just threw that elbow and jumped towards him,” the father told 7NEWS Adelaide.
“If anything I’m more worried about the victim.
“Hopefully she’s all right.”
The alleged offender has since been identified as Scott Michael Antrobus.
He was charged with one count each of assault, hindering police and refusing to provide his name and address.
He is also alleged to have been in possession of an ice pipe at the time of his arrest.
Mr Antrobus was remanded in custody to face court again in April.
