Galipo Foods has seen a 100% increase in energy costs since 2022

Galipo Foods said they have seen a 100 per cent increase in power bills since 2022, forking out more than $100,000 a month for energy costs.

Australians ‘sick' of seeing power prices rise under Labor

Popular SA food service distributor Galipo Foods has said they are forking out more than $100,000 in power bills — a 100 per cent increase in cost of power bills since 2022.

The family business has been in operation for 41 years, supplying products to more than 3500 customers across the state.

Business general manager Nathan Narayanan said they have had to absorb a lot of the losses, as they cannot pass on the rising costs to their customers.

“It’s hard to come up with mitigation plans without having a clear view of what the future holds,” Mr Narayanan said.

“As political powers change, we need to understand what that means for our business … a consistency in policies will help businesses have a better future”.

Energy costs have become “the fourth highest cost to their business”, he said, from paying around $56,000 to $100,000 in power bills in the past three years.

“Any change in direction in that cost to our business will be significantly helpful and I’m sure it will help a lot of other businesses around,” he said.

Climate change and energy shadow minister Ted O’Brien said energy policies need a directional change to keep prices down.

“We believe Australia should have a balanced energy mix ... that includes renewables, gas, and as coal retires from the system, zero emissions nuclear energy,” he said.

Opposition Leader, Vincent Tarzia said they would reinstate the “Home Battery Scheme” to concentrate on affordability and reliability.

“We know South Australians are struggling, with many businesses shutting their doors after electricity prices skyrocketing by almost $1,700 under the Malinauskas Labor Government,” he said.

Minister Tom Koutsantonis said while the power prices are “the legacy of previous Liberal Governments which privatised SA’s electricity system”, measures have been put in place to support businesses with the rising costs.

“(We have provided) eligible small businesses up to $325 relief on their 2024-25 electricity bills … and also provided $31 million to over 900 SA businesses to assist them to purchase energy efficient equipment through the latest round of the Economic Recovery Fund,” he said.

“This investment is expected to save businesses $23 million each year on their power bills.”
