A person has died after they were pulled from a pool at the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre at Oaklands Park in Adelaide’s south on Wednesday.
Police and emergency services were called to the swimming centre just after 3:40pm, to reports that a person had drowned.
The Advertiser understands that the person had a medical episode in the water, and was pulled from a pool, before paramedics performed CPR in an attempt to resuscitate them.
A YMCA spokesperson released a statement on behalf of the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC), saying they were “saddened” by the person’s loss of life.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of a patron at SAALC today. Our thoughts are with their family and loved ones,” they said.
“Lifeguards and emergency services responded immediately. SA Police are now investigating, and we’re fully cooperating.
“We are also ensuring support is available for our staff and any community members affected by this incident.
“Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation, we will not be providing further comment at this time and appreciate your understanding.”
By 5pm on Wednesday the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre was still accepting patrons, with a steady stream of families and children entering the facility.
Outside the centre there were a number of emergency services vehicles, including two ambulances just outside the facility’s events entrance.
While many people were entering the facility, there were also parents collecting their children early due to an “incident” at the pool.
A staff member confirmed the centre was open, except for the competition pool which was closed to the public.
A reporter from The Advertiser was denied entry to the aquatic centre on the grounds media were not allowed to access at that time.
The SA Aquatic Centre is Adelaide’s primary swimming centre.
