The latest person charged under Operation Ironside is accused of laundering more than $640,000 and trafficking drugs in 13 Adelaide suburbs.

Australian agents topple global crime rings

Operation Ironside detectives have charged a Brooklyn Park man with laundering more than $640,000 and dealing methamphetamine in more than a dozen suburbs across Adelaide.

Damian Stavreas, 36, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday only hours after being arrested by detectives attached to Operation Ironside.

During the brief hearing Magistrate Karim Soetratma flipped through a dozen pages of charges laid against Mr Stavreas.

He quizzed the prosecution about the “undercover operation” that led to Mr Stavreas being arrested

Counsel for Mr Stavreas said her client would not be applying for bail.

He will appear in court again next month as part of continuing Ironside committal lists where dozens of accused and their lawyers appear for largely administrative hearings.

Court records show Mr Stavreas is charged with 29 counts of trafficking methamphetamine.

He is also accused of 10 counts of trafficking in a commercial quantity of methamphetamine and 35 counts of money laundering.

Mr Stavreas’ charge sheet, which was released by the Adelaide Magistrates Court, shows he is charged with laundering $641,950 in the space of less than six months.

He is also accused of trafficking methamphetamine in Enfield, Tranmere, Firle, Kilburn, Ridleyton, Magill, Mansfield Park, Rostrevor, Welland, Klemzig, Burton, Beverly and West Croydon over than same period.

He was arrested as part of ongoing analysis of millions of messages sent over AN0M, an app created by the Australian Federal Police and FBI to track criminal activity.

Police alleged Mr Stavreas used the encrypted app to facilitate drug trafficking.

The app has been the centre of a major international sting of organised crime, which has included hundreds of arrests across Australia.

Investigators from the Operation Ironside task force are expected to continue to review AN0M messaging and where sufficient evidence is identified, further arrests will be made.

The arrest comes as prosecutors and defence lawyers continue to work to get a trial case before the Supreme Court later this year to test the validity of the messages intercepted by police.

The Supreme Court has previously heard that messages sent and received on the AN0M app were intercepted by police using three different kinds of warrants.

Lawyers for the accused have indicated they will attack the legality of the intercepts and argue that the messages can never be used against their clients come trial.
