Revealed: South Australians charged over the Operation Ironside AN0M police sting

Today we reveal the identities of dozens more South Australians charged over the Operation Ironside organised crime sting. See who they are, what they’re charged with, and where they live.

More than a year before the Operation Ironside raids, information from the AN0M messaging app was already being used to lay other charges in South Australia.

For the first time, The Advertiser can reveal the extent of the police operation by naming more than 75 people charged as a result of information from the encrypted app, which had been compromised by international law enforcement in an audacious sting.

Some have already pleaded guilty, others are heading for trial in the District or Supreme Court.

The vast majority of Ironside files remain in magistrates courts across Adelaide, with those accused yet to enter a plea to the charges.

On June 7 and 8, more than 40 people were arrested in South Australia on charges ranging from conspiracy to murder to drug trafficking to money laundering.

Three accused drug traffickers have since been extradited from NSW to SA.

The arrests, both in June and in the months before, stemmed from an encrypted phone app allegedly used by members of the criminal underworld. But as millions of messages were sent on the app, law enforcement authorities around the world were watching in real time.

Here is the list of all South Australians we can legally name as being arrested following Operation Ironside.

JASON APPLEHOF

Aged 38 from Whyalla Stuart. Charged with trafficking in a controlled drug and knowingly engaging in money laundering.

ROMAN ILARIO BAFTIROSKI

Aged 34 from Seaton. Charged with trafficking in a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug and money laundering.

TIMOTHY SHANE BARKLA

Aged 46 from Willaston. Charged with trafficking and manufacturing a controlled drug.

ALICIA ALICE BARTLEY

Aged 37 from Angle Park. Charged with three counts of trafficking in a controlled drug, money laundering and firearms offences.

DARREN EDWARD BAXTER

Aged 39 from Angle Park. Charged with three counts of trafficking in a controlled drug and firearms offences.

SIMON BEKIRI

Aged 40 from Hendon. Charged with breaching bail on May 28, 2020 when he was arrested in Sydney after leaving South Australia. On June 26, 2020, he pleaded guilty in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court and was convicted for the breach. He was spared any other penalty.

VANESSA LOUISE BENNETT

Aged 39 from Poonindie. Has pleaded not guilty to a charge of trafficking in a commercial quantity of a controlled drug in Adelaide.

ANDREW JOHN BENZ

Aged 45 from Greenwith. Charged with trafficking in a large commercial quantity and a commercial quantity of a controlled drug at Port Wakefield.

APOSTLE BROIKOS

Aged 18 from Burnside. Charged with trafficking in a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug at Yamba, and manufacturing a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug at Morphett Vale.

TYLER HERNANDEZ BROOK

Aged 29 from Hackham. Pleaded guilty to cultivating a commercial quantity of a controlled drug, possessing prescribed equipment and diverting electricity at Hackham.

ADAM BURGESS

Aged 41 from Munno Para. Charged with cultivating a controlled drug, possessing prescribed equipment and diverting electricity at Munno Para West – sentenced to three months in prison which was fully suspended in May this year.

MATTHEW JAMES CAVANAGH

Aged 37 from Lockleys. Charged with two counts of trafficking in a controlled drug and possessing prescribed equipment.

JOSEPH COGNO

Aged 53 from Milang. Charged with trafficking in a large commercial quantity and a commercial quantity of a controlled drug as well as two counts of money laundering at Port Adelaide.

Aged 43 from Happy Valley. Charged with manufacturing a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug at Panorama and Morphett Vale. Also charged with trafficking in a controlled drug at Morphett Vale.

Aged 22 from Clovelly Park. Charged with manufacturing a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug at Panorama and Morphett Vale.

Aged 29 from Christies Down. Charged with money laundering and possessing a prescription drug, a controlled drug and a dangerous article.

Aged 30 from Mount Barker. Pleaded guilty to trafficking in a large commercial quantity of methamphetamine and a commercial quantity of heroin at Mount Barker.

Aged 37 from Underdale. Charged with multiple counts of money laundering and traffic in large commercial quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine.

Aged 42 from Salisbury North. In custody after being charged with causing serious harm with intent to cause serious harm at Salisbury North.
