SA MP Jayne Stinson has made political history by becoming the first mum to do something that’s an everyday occurrence – she breastfed her baby in parliament.

Little Quinn Stinson helped make history in state parliament on Tuesday – simply by having a meal.

The seven-month-old and his mother – Badcoe MP Jayne Stinson – have become the first mum and bub to breastfeed in state parliament.

The move was made possible by a change to parliament’s rules, known as standing orders, to allow breastfeeding in the chamber.

Ms Stinson breastfed Quinn in the chamber twice on Tuesday – although he did become slightly distracted and ended up babbling to fellow MPs during the task.

“It is a moment in history and it feels really special to me, and I think when he grows up he’ll understand how special this moment is as well,” Ms Stinson said.

“I think it’s really important that we normalise breastfeeding and that women everywhere can feel like this is something they can do and not be judged.”

Ms Stinson said she also hoped parliament’s new workplace rule would help promote the benefits of breastfeeding.

“I think it’s really important that people see breastfeeding and it starts a conversation,” she said.

“Not everyone can breastfeed - it can be really tough for people, but I think a bit of support from our family and friends goes a long way.”
