AFL great Eddie Betts responds after Voice vandal takes ‘Yes’ poster from home

AFL legend Eddie Betts has responded with class after a No voter’s “sad” act in the wake of the failed Voice referendum.

'That just made me feel like I don't belong here in Australia': Eddie Betts

Former Crows star Eddie Betts has responded with class after a man tore down a ‘Yes’ referendum banner outside his Melbourne home.

AFL great Betts, who threw his support behind the ‘Yes’ campaign in the lead-up to the unsuccessful referendum, shared a now-deleted video to his Instagram of the culprit.

Footage shows the man parking his ute up the street before Betts’ home before getting out the car and walking up to a ‘Yes’ banner hanging on Betts’ fence.

The man can be seen untying the banner from the fence and carrying it back to his vehicle.

“Hey old fulla, it’s all good. The no vote won,” he captioned the video.

“You can spend your time doing things that matter now, that’s what I’m doing.

“You took away the kids’ voices and now you’ve taken their YES sign – if you want to catch up to return it, let me know.”

The post was met with a wave of support and outrage from fans and famous names, with model Megan Gale labelling the act “disgusting beyond words”.

“If I see him I’m giving him a right serve,” Gale wrote.

The video has since been taken down from Betts’ Instagram.

Betts was among a number of sporting legends – including Johnathan Thurston and Evonne Goolagong Cawley – to contribute to the case for voting ‘Yes’ in a 2000-word essay in the lead-up to the referendum.

“I know the Voice won’t fix everything overnight but I feel like it’s the opening of a pathway to make sure we are included and respected in decision-making on issues that impact us,” Betts said at the time.

One of the most-loved players in the AFL, Betts booted 310 goals in 132 games for the Crows before returning to Melbourne to play for his former club Carlton in 2020.

Betts has remained an outspoken voice against racism in the AFL and published his memoir, The Boy from Boomerang Crescent, in August last year.
