A popular burger joint in Adelaide has closed its door, nearly six months after it opened – but lights at the site won’t be turned off for good.
Last week, owners of the beloved eatery, Jumbo Smash, shared the “bittersweet” announcement of their closure to devastated foodies.
Pedestrians walking past the venue on Exchange Place also noticed white paint on window panels.
“Jumbo was a form of creative expression and a space to gather community through food, music and events,” they wrote in the post.
“And in this sense, culturally the concept was a win, a place we wanted to hang out – for that, we are very proud of what we were able to achieve.”
They said their “unsustainable business model” was part of the reason they decided to close.
“Our goal in hospitality is to deliver innovative concepts, we’re consumers before owners, we love hospitality and building worlds within four walls and a plate of food.”
“Thank you to those that embraced our staff, suppliers, artists and everyone in between.”
When it opened last year, chef and co-owner Jimmy Garside told The Advertiser the concept was inspired by American style burgers with “thin patties smashed with onions”.
“It was designed in America because beef was so expensive, onions were a bulking agent and they keep the meat really juicy,” Mr Garside said in July.
“People claim to serve smashed burgers, but very few actually do it.”
Co-owner Saba Maghsoudi, also behind Pinco Deli, said the breakfast and lunch diner hoped to “bring everything we love – music, burgers, liquor and dancing”.
The duo, alongside their other co-owner Elijah Makris, make the decision to transform the venue into Pinco Italian Food Club – the third site for Pinco Deli.
The new restaurant will give diners a taste of pasta, a range of sandwiches – including fried chicken, smoked turkey with bacon and egg – and small plates for lunch and dinner.
The space will still host their popular jazz nights for patrons who loved the event at Jumbo.
