South Australians will fork out almost $20 more this Easter for a shopping trolley full of 15 favourites – including seafood, chocolate bunnies, eggs and hot cross buns – than they did last year for the same items.
New research from Compare the Market has revealed 13 of the 15 Woolworths products reviewed have risen in price, with only two items – a Darrell Lea Easter bilby and a Woolworths’ Easter Mini Dessert Selection – staying the same price.
None of the products have gone down in price.
The Lindt 200g Easter Gold Bunny had the biggest jump in price, from $14 in 2024 to $18 this year. Cadbury’s Crunchie Easter egg was another fan favourite that has increased this year, now costing $6, compared with $5 last year.
It wasn’t only chocolate treats that have been a victim of rising cost of living, with Tasmanian Atlantic salmon fillets now costing $44 per kilo, compared with $42 last year.
“While an extra dollar here and there might not seem like much, it all really adds up at the checkout,” Compare the Market spokeswoman Sarah Orr said.
With two kids under two, Nicole Ransom knows the importance of hunting around for a bargain, especially in the lead-up to Easter.
From securing specials well in advance to buying in bulk, the 31-year-old is well versed in how to stretch her dollar.
But as the cost of living continues to rise, she admits it’s getting tougher and tougher for families to afford the special treats at Easter, which so many households have become accustomed to.
“Usually we would all buy Easter eggs for everyone in the family, but it’s just so expensive, so we are just going to buy a couple things for the kids and not go overboard,” Mrs Ransom said.
If you’re looking to snag some fruit hot cross buns this Easter, Aldi is your pick of the big three shopping centres, with a six-pack costing just $4.
The discount supermarket was also the cheapest for your standard milk chocolate Easter bunny, costing $2.80, in comparison to $6 for similar products at Woolworths and Coles.
For those with a bigger budget, a Haigh’s 110g milk chocolate bilby costs $15.90.
Seafood is another staple in many homes come Easter, with tiger prawns costing $32/kg from Woolworths and $36/kg at Coles.
Those opting for local seafood could visit Cappos’s Fish Market, which has South Australian cooked prawns for $29.99/kg, a whole mulloway for $19/kg and a whole local snapper at $29/kg. Angelakis Bros has half a dozen shucked Coffin Bay oysters for $12.99.
