Whale season has started early on Kangaroo Island with a Humpback Whale spotted at Kingscote Jetty.
The whale was seen frolicking around in the water before making its way over to the jetty, much to the delight of a group of fishos on Monday afternoon.
Zach Poole was fishing at the time and captured the moment the friendly whale swam over on camera.
“A rare out-of-season Humpback Whale got within meters of us,” he captioned the video, which he shared to Facebook.
“One in a million sighting at this time of year.”
The whale had been swimming several metres away before making its way over to the group.
Unafraid of fishing lines, the majestic creature came right up to the jetty to greet the crowd, spouting several times.
“Holy shit, it’s massive,” one person said in the video.
“Goddamn,” another said.
Forming part of the migratory path for both Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales, Kangaroo Island is a great place for whale watching.
However, whales aren’t typically seen along the coast until May as they migrate during the cooler months.
Humpback whales are regarded as playful and, when passing through, and are frequently seen breaching.
