With its average of over 300 days of sunshine per year, Townsville has enticed one of Australia’s leading solar and battery providers to set up shop as part of its ambitious national expansion into six new locations.
By offering innovative and efficient solar and battery solutions, Smart Energy will help Townsville residents address the urgent need to combat rising energy costs, while also meeting the increased demand for eco-friendly alternatives.
Smart Energy joint managing director Liam Navon said the company was launched in Byron Bay in 2016 after its founders noticed high levels of poor customer service and price gouging by other solar providers.
“We see in a lot of regional areas in Australia is that the local residents don’t necessarily have a whole lot of choice between different suppliers,” Mr Navon said.
“Also, we fill the gap in the market where you’re getting the full experience of both a large company that is able to provide quick process and customer support, as well as after-care, which is often lacking in the solar industry.”
Mr Navon said his company could help residents in the event that the power was cut, like it was for days for some areas after Tropical Cyclone Kirrily struck.
“(We offer a) grid independent solution where you’ve got your own solar system, and a battery that can continue to operate even if the grid is down. We think that would be a very attractive solution to local customers,” he said.
“We like to see ourselves as an energy solution provider … able to set people up with solar systems and batteries, EV chargers, and we soon have plans to also start offering home energy management systems.
“We find that a lot of people are very keen to make this switch away from the traditional energy retailer which is costing them a lot of money, and they’re looking to make an investment in their own property.”
He said the company’s new office opened in February at 92 Boundary St, Railway Estate, providing a location for their sales team to operate, where he hoped to build up the staff to around 20.
“They’re going to be providing solutions to local residents for solar and batteries, looking at energy bills and tailoring solutions,” Mr Navon said.
“Then everything else is going to be supported by head office, as well as having the actual jobs themselves installed by local teams (installation partners) in Townsville.”
