A shocking video circulating on social media shows two young boys riding a single electric scooter through busy Darwin traffic, riding alongside cars and coming dangerously close to a truck.
The footage, recorded around 6pm on Sunday on Daly Street, was captured and shared online by Darwin CBD resident Aadarsha Kunar, 30, in an effort to raise awareness about road safety.
“At first, I thought they were just trying to cross the road and would go up onto the footpath,” Mr Kunar said.
“But then they stayed on the road, and I was concerned for their safety.”
The video shows the boys weaving across the road, shifting from the middle of the road to the left lane before disappearing down a side street.
Mr Kunar praised other drivers for slowing down to avoid an accident.
The footage has sparked mixed reactions online, with many concerned about the children’s welfare.
“Far out! They’re kids!” one person commented.
Others called for greater parental supervision, saying, “Parents need to have a talk to them about road safety.”
Some social media users speculated they had seen similar-looking children engaging in the same behaviour on Friday night along Trower Road and Vanderlin Drive.
NT Police have strongly condemned the incident, with Commander David Moore warning of the severe risks involved.
“The behaviour of the youths on the scooter is incredibly dangerous and has put themselves and motorists at great risk of a serious incident occurring,” he said.
“That incident could have very easily resulted in a serious injury or even a fatality. It goes without saying that two youths, clearly not wearing helmets and erratically riding a scooter, should not be on Territory roads.”
Police are urging parents to speak with their children about road safety and remind them that e-scooters must be used responsibly and in accordance with the law.
