Crime-related resources will be reinstated in parts of the region as a result of re-emerging “opportunistic, juvenile and property-related crimes.”
Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor Lawrence Springborg said the Queensland Police Service will reinstate additional resources this week, in a bid to reduce crime in the area.
The Goondiwindi mayor is in the process of writing a letter to State Minister for Police and Corrective Services Mark Ryan, to request permanent allocation of the additional resources.
“QPS had originally committed additional district police resources to the town in May following council’s advocacy,” Mr Springborg said.
“However in light of the re-emerging spate of offences, council was advised this morning that those resources were removed about two weeks ago.
“I think this makes it very clear that what we’re experiencing is primarily opportunistic, juvenile, property-related crime.”
Mr Springborg said the resources made a big difference by reducing incidents of crime and keeping the local community safe.
“I think reinstating those resources is absolutely the right outcome and we are very grateful that they will once again be provided to the Goondiwindi community,” he said.
“Now we know what works let’s work towards a permanent solution … ultimately crime and the courts system sit under the power of the state, but I look forward to a proactive discussion about the permanent allocation of prime police resources to our border area.”
The Goondiwindi Mayor has also met with Queensland’s Deputy Premier Steven Miles to discuss the appointment of a cross-border commissioner for Queensland.
The first Border Towns Crime Prevention Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 14.
Established in May the purpose of the committee is to facilitate actions to improve anti-social behaviour in Goondiwindi and areas on the Queensland and New South Wales border.
The committee consists of representatives from organisations including QPS, the Goondiwindi Chamber of Commerce and New South Wales police.
