A MAN has allegedly attempted to use counterfeit coins to buy an item from a Cannonvale store with this morning.

Whitsunday police said a man presented fake $1 and $2 coins this morning, about 8am, when he attempted to buy an item at a Shute Harbour Rd business.

Police allege the man presented multiple coins to pay for the item, however, the employee of the store refused to take them as payment as they were suspicious that they were counterfeit coins.

When the man went to leave the store he was approached by an employee who spoke to him about the authenticity of the coins and the man willingly handed them over to the employee.

The man then left the area on a black mountain bike.

Police say the man was described to be of caucasian appearance, between the ages of 30 and 40, 177cm tall, short grey beard and was wearing dark coloured shorts and a long sleeved shirt.

Police have now encouraged any business or employee who may suspect they are in possession of counterfeit currency to contact their local police immediately.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) have released information which can assist people to identify specific aspects of both counterfeit notes and coins.
