A pair of environmental activists who allegedly stopped work at multiple North Queensland coal ports this week will remain on behind bars on remand until their next court dates.
Bowen man Kyle Magee and Townsville woman Juliet Lamont appeared at Bowen Magistrates Court on Tuesday following an early morning protest at the North Queensland Export Terminal, formerly the Adani Abbot Point Coal Terminal, in which they both ‘locked on’ to the coal loading facility, causing an emergency shut down of several hours.
Bowen police Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Craig Shepherd alleged Mr Magee, 36, and Ms Lamont, 50, were “uncooperative” and “refused to comply” when police attended the port in response to a request from security staff about 3.30am.
The port was unable to recommence operations until about 7.30am when police finished cutting the pair free.
Mr Magee and Ms Lamont were each charged with trespass, contravene police direction, use a dangerous attachment device, and interfere with port operations.
Magistrate James Morton adjourned Ms Lamont’s charges to Sarina Magistrates Court on November 8, and Magee’s charges to Bowen Magistrates Court on November 5.
He formally refused bail for each alleged protester and remanded the pair in custody.
In a statement from environmental group ‘Frontline Action on Coal’ on Tuesday morning, Mr Magee and Ms Lamont were on bail for a recent protest at Mackay’s Hay Point Coal Terminal at the time of their latest alleged offending.
In videos released by the group, Mr Magee and Ms Lamont shared their motivation for allegedly participating in the protests, with Ms Lamont highlighting “the criminal acts of our government when we’re in the fight for our lives” and Mr Magee, a father of two, expressing concerns about the potential “suffering” of future generations.
Frontline Action on Coal stated the protests were planned to coincide with international climate discussions at COP26 in Glasgow, UK.
