A young Central Queensland man whose mum tried to cover up his car crash in a supercharged Holden has had his day in court.
Xi Storm Duroux, 20, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to driving without due care and attention, driving a high-powered vehicle without certificate of exemption, giving false or misleading statements, and driving a defective vehicle.
The court heard that Duroux was the driver in a single-vehicle crash at Gladstone on the night of December 15 - one which his mother, Nicole Elizabeth Proverbs, 51, tried to “cover up” by telling authorities that she had been driving at the time of the incident.
Proverbs had previously pleaded guilty in the same court to obstructing police, and obstructing/hindering an ambulance officer, and she was fined $950 with no conviction recorded.
During Duroux’s matter, the court heard he had been driving a 2002 Holden Calais sedan, registered in his name, along Glenlyon Rd in-bound towards Gladstone Central.
As he was exiting the roundabout, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to slide and collide with the barrier fencing of a footpath before spinning and coming to a stop against the damaged fence.
Duroux held a provisional driver’s licence which meant he was not legally allowed to drive the vehicle which had a “supercharged” petrol engine.
The court heard when Duroux was questioned by police about the crash, he initially told them he was a passenger in the rear of the car at the time and that his mother was driving.
Later, police investigations revealed that was not the case.
Police also found a rear tyre of Duroux’s car was bald which resulted in the defective vehicle charge.
Magistrate Mary Buchanan fined Duroux $1500.
There was no licence disqualification and no conviction was recorded.
