John Glendenning charged over alleged child sex offences in Proserpine
A magistrate has refused to delay proceedings against a man facing multiple alleged child exploitation charges despite his struggles to secure legal aid.
A man has been charged with shocking offences after allegedly obtaining commercial sexual services from a child.
John Glendenning appeared in Proserpine Magistrates Court charged with alleged indecent treatment of children under 16, obtaining commercial sexual services from a child under 16, and using the internet to procure children under 16 and intentionally meeting or go to meet that child.
The court heard the 61-year-old had submitted a legal aid application but that was refused in August due to insufficient bank statements.
Rosemary Varley from Legal Aid Queensland appeared as duty lawyer on behalf of Mr Glendenning, telling the court she had advised him that these were “very serious matters” that were “not going away” and he needed to get funding sorted.
Police prosecutor Lynda Hughes said a brief had been prepared.
Magistrate Anna Smith said she wanted to keep the matter moving, adding if legal aid funding wasn’t sorted Mr Glendenning needed to arrange a time himself to view the brief.
The case was adjourned to October 13 at which time Mr Glendenning would need to advise the court whether he would be represented at a committal.
