Construction has commenced on the much anticipated $600,000 Bowen Sporting Complex upgrade which is set to give locals the opportunity to enjoy the complex day and night.
The upgrades commenced in late January with the installation of high-quality field lighting, specially designed to meet the standards required for local night cricket matches and semi-professional football, supporting both gameplay and training sessions.
The lighting will not only be shared between the cricket, rugby union, and touch football fields but also the adjacent Woodlands Road.
A Whitsunday Regional Council spokeswoman said the much-anticipated upgrade would support their local clubs, ensuring teams and local residents could enjoy sport and recreation well into the evening.
“We look forward to seeing the lights switched on later this year, enhancing access to sports for our Bowen community and fostering participation for athletes of all levels,” she said.
She added construction works were progressing well with a completion date set for April, weather permitting.
The project is funded, in part, by the Queensland Government’s Minor Infrastructure and Inclusive Facilities Fund which contributed $250,000 towards the project aiming to help make sure local sport and active recreation facilities are safe, accessible, inclusive and more efficient.
Whitsunday Regional Council funded the remaining costs through its capital works program, bringing the total project cost to $600,000.
