This December, the Melbourne Grammar School Symphony Orchestra will head to Bowen to present a special one off performance with all proceeds supporting the work of Anglicare North Queensland.

The unique program of chamber music and works for chamber orchestra will be held at the Holy Trinity Church and is a part of the Melbourne Grammar School Symphony Orchestra’s tour through Queensland and New South Wales bringing some of the best classical music to the regions.

Melbourne Grammar School has a long tradition of embarking on orchestra tours, giving students the opportunity to share their talents with audiences across the country.

Year 12 student and 2024 Captain of Music, George Pourpouras, said the orchestra tour was one of the events he was most looking forward to in year 12.

“It is a great opportunity to make music with my mates, and to travel to parts of the country I might not have otherwise had the chance to see,” they said.

The 75-person orchestra will travel from Far North Queensland, performing down the east coast of Australia, before heading back to Melbourne.

“Providing our music students with a range of performance experiences is an important part of Melbourne Grammar’s music program,” said Headmaster Philip Grutzner.

“These tours provide the students with the experience of a being professional musician, the experience of seeing our country and the opportunity to give back to the wider community.”

When they aren’t performing students will have the opportunity to see some of the country’s incredible natural wonders and big attractions as they road trip down the coast.

“By performing in and for regional communities, we hope our young musicians not only share their joy of their music making, but also gain insight into life beyond the big cities,” explained Pat Miller, Director of Symphony Orchestra.

Attendees at the performance in Bowen can expect to hear musical masterpieces by Bach, Mozart, Rachmaninov, and Brahms performed by the young orchestra showcasing their incredible group work along with some talented soloists.

The performance is set to be held at the Holy Trinity Church in Bowen at 7:30pm on Thursday, December 12, 2024.
