An argument over a father’s gambling issue sparked a violent attack when he lashed out against his partner of 20 years at a popular hotel. Here’s what happened.

An argument over a father’s gambling issues escalated when he became violent against his partner of 20 years at a popular Whitsunday hotel.
Cameron Alexander Barlow, 34, was on his way to Townsville with the mother of his three children from Glenden, and the couple had decided to stop by the Reef Gateway Hotel on the way on March 8.
Prosecutor Sergeant Emma Myors told the court the couple had started arguing in the gaming area of the motel, before continuing on in the smoking area at 12.10am.
Sergeant Myors said the argument ended with Barlow striking his partner in the face, which left a “red mark” on her nose.
She told Magistrate Michelle Howard to consider the “significance of this type of offences” in her sentencing.
ATSILS lawyer Philip Moore said the argument between the mine operator and his partner had been about his gambling issues, but that he had been in contact with a support service since the incident.
Mr Moore tendered a reference letter from Barlow’s mother who said his behaviour was out of character and she had vouched for his close relationship to his children.
Mr Moore also added Barlow had no similar history on his record.
Barlow pleaded guilty in Proserpine Magistrates Court to assault occasioning bodily harm in a domestic relationship. He was fined $800 and the conviction was not recorded.
