Highly skilled mines rescue teams will receive cutting edge training and have shorter travel times with plans for a Queensland Mines Rescue Service training centre in Moranbah already finalised and development applications being submitted this year.

QMRS chief executive officer, Tim Jackson, said the lease would give QMRS the opportunity to expand their footprint in the Bowen Basin.

“We have 450 volunteer underground team members, and 50 volunteer mine inertisation unit team members, who need to maintain their skills every two months to enable them to respond to a wide range of hazards and situations at mines.”

Anglo American and Exxaro have leased the 18-hectare parcel of land on the corner of Railway Road and Moranbah Access Road to QMRS.

Anglo American Australia CEO Dan van der Westhuizen said it marked a pivotal moment for the industry’s preparedness and response capabilities in Moranbah, placing the town at the forefront of mines rescue training excellence.
