After three long years in the making, Warwick Uniting Church’s affordable housing plan is one step closer to coming to fruition.
Southern Downs Regional Council has now approved development plans for four units to be built on the Killarney parish’s adjoining property on Eucalyptus St.
Warwick Uniting Church reverend Ansie Liebenberg said there was still progress to be made, but was hopeful construction could begin in 2024.
“Every six months we get a step closer, and hopefully 2024 is the year,” Reverend Liebenberg said.
Reverend Liebenberg said the church was hoping to make an official announcement on when we could expect to see the units constructed in the near future.
The Daily News spoke with Reverend Liebenberg around this time who realised just how critical the housing crisis on the Southern Downs was when she was confronted with it at her doorstep.
“We had a homeless person living on our doorstep with his tent for eight months, and our congregation befriended him, this was part of our journey to discovering the human story behind homelessness and the challenges that people facing those conditions experience,” Reverend Liebenberg said.
the church’s future plans will also include 10 affordable units in Warwick located on their unused land on Guy and Stacey St.
