WHO should be the next two Immortals in Australian rugby league?

The selection panel has some Warwick-area influence with Broncos coach Wayne Bennett one of those tasked with determining who gets the nod.

This year they went with Norm Provan and Mal Meninga as well as three players from the early days and all were deserving inductees. One would assume Provan will be the last Immortal from the Reg Gasnier and Johnny Raper era.

Looking at the past 30 years, some of the names that come to mind are Shane Webcke who should come into consideration along with a few more forwards of the same era like Petero Civoniceva and Gorden Tallis, halves Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk, Brett Kenny and Allan Langer, hookers Steve Walters and Cameron Smith and fullback Billy Slater.

If I had to select the first two, I reckon it would be Slater and Smith.

Looks like I have mainly listed Queenslanders so let us know who should come into consideration from Blues territory.

Weekend footy

THERE are still four teams from the Southern Downs in the running for TRL premierships this season.

In other codes, the Water Rats women will be back in action at Goondiwindi on Saturday, the Redbacks are away to second-placed South Toowoomba in AFL and the Warwick Wolves 16-17 years football team has a home game at noon Saturday at Queens Park.

It is a tough gig for a team to be playing away games all season and this Saturday's home game is the first of the season for the young Warwick team.
