A series of unfortunate events that saw a Warwick pig hunter forget to remove from his pants a 20cm knife ended in a court date after the ‘very stupid’ pub blunder.

NSW government to crack down on youth knife crime

A pig hunter’s pub blunder has landed him in front of the magistrate, with the official warning the man the incident could have ended worse than it did.

Jarred Roland Hector Bradfield pleaded guilty to one charge of possessing a knife in a public place on Monday.

The man was busted in possession of a large knife at a Warwick venue on October 17, after a publican noticed the weapon hidden in his pants.

The Horse & Jockey hotel manager requested the 20cm knife to be placed behind the bar until Bradfield left.

Bradfield co-operated with the request, and had simply “forgotten” to remove the weapon before entering the establishment.

The court was told the 34-year-old father-of-one was out pig hunting, an activity he had done for most his life, before arriving at the Palmerin St establishment.

What should have been a silly mistake became a police matter after officers responded to an unrelated matter at the pub, where they discovered the bladed weapon.

Defence lawyer Bonnie O’Brien noted Bradfield’s actions were “very stupid” and made “no excuses” for the incident, but said the abattoir worker was co-operative and had a lack of criminal history.

“There’s very good reasons why the law says people can’t walk around with knives, you could lose control or someone else could use knife,” magistrate Virginia Sturgess said.

“Particularly at a pub where there can be a lot of fighting going on, people would be very concerned knowing there was someone with a knife there.”

Bradfield was slapped with a $300 fine with no conviction recorded.

The knife was also forfeited.
