A Warwick car wash customer has been charged with stealing floor mats from a fellow patron, but he insists he was simply trying to do the right thing.

Craig Andrew Humphrey acknowledged during his appearance in Warwick Magistrates Court that when he went to Soapy’s Car wash in Condamine Street on February 16, he put floor mats that had been pinned to the side of one of the bays by another customer in his car and took them home.

The move saw police knocking on his door within hours and Mr Humphrey slapped with a stealing charge.

The 54-year-old told the court he was pleading guilty to the charge.

However, things took a turn when he told magistrate Virginia Sturgess that although he took the mats home with him, he had every intention of returning them.

“On that particular day I put those mats in the back of my car, if the door (to the business office) was open, I would have returned them then,” he said.

“I have done that before with many mats that have been left there.

“I had all intentions of taking them back, unfortunately I left them in the back of my ute and police were on the doorstep with a warrant at 3.40 the next day.

“I was trying to do the right thing.”

Ms Sturgess told Mr Humphrey that for him to be guilty of the charge, he had to have had the intention to permanently deprive the owner of that item.

“I didn’t have intention of that,” Mr Humphrey told her.

Police prosecutor Steve de Lissa told the court that when officers spoke with Mr Humphrey at the time he was charged, “he stated he had stolen the floor mats and was very sorry”.
The mats were returned to police.

Ms Sturgess did not accept the guilty plea and ordered a brief of evidence be prepared.

The matter was adjourned to April 3.
