Bail granted to Warwick man facing two charges of rape, assault occasioning bodily harm

A young man facing ‘very serious’ charges has been granted bail with strict conditions after his legal representation said the alleged offending ‘seems out of character’.

What happens after a sexual assault?

A young Southern Downs man facing “very serious” charges has been granted bail, with one particular condition.

The man, aged in his early 20s – who cannot be named for legal reasons – appeared in court on Monday afternoon at Warwick Magistrates Court.

It is unclear at present when the alleged offending is said to have occurred.

Duty lawyer Clare Hine told the court at the man’s bail application he was still a “young man” who was employed as a cadet civil engineer at a wind farm in the region, and was currently studying in the field.

The man has also worked as a carpenter in the construction industry, Ms Hine said.

“He denies the offending that is before you today, and has no history, it certainly seems out of character,” she said.

Documents show the man is facing four charges including two counts of rape, one charge of assault occasioning bodily harm, and one charge of disabling in order to commit indictable offence.

It is understood he has not entered a plea to any charges at this stage.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess said the alleged “very serious” offending showed “very serious nature in the charges” with police prosecutors wanting bail refused.

Bail was granted by the magistrate on the condition that the man resided at an Ipswich address, had no contact with the complainant and not enter either Stanthorpe or Wallangarra.

The matter was adjourned until February 14 for committal mention.
