Police have arrested two “young boys” over the alleged violent stabbing of two cousins in Surfers Paradise at the weekend, as more details emerged about the terrifying incident.

The 20-year-old Toowoomba cousins were attacked about 6.15am on Saturday as they were walking south along Surfers Paradise Boulevard following a night out in Surfers.

Police on Monday morning arrested a 17-year-old and 16-year-old boy in Durack and Pallara in Brisbane.

They were both charged with wounding offences and were expected to appear in court in Brisbane later on Tuesday.

“It’s a good result for us. We’ve got those two people in custody,” Superintendent Peter Miles, of Gold Coast police, said.

“We’ve still got two very sick young men in hospital too, cousins. They’re doing well, as far as their health goes, but still, three stab wounds to the abdomen, buttocks and leg, it’s only by the grace of God that we’re not looking at a homicide.”

Supt Miles said this morning’s arrests came after police missed an opportunity to take the pair into custody on Sunday.

“Yesterday they decamped in front of police. We had our chance but we missed it unfortunately. Today we didn’t,” he said.

“(Police) attended their address in Brisbane but they had gone just prior to us getting there.”

He added police were still looking to speak with other people in relation to the incident while detectives worked to piece together the events leading up to it.

“(It appears) random at this stage. Those inquiries will be part of the investigation to try and work out the lead-in, what was said, what interactions they had prior to the actual incident,” he said.

“And if there’s any other people we need to look at as accomplices or getaway drivers, things like that.

“So the investigation has still got a long way to go.”
