Three people have miraculously avoided serious injury after a train was left mangled and derailed after a collision with a truck at a “notorious” crossing off the Barwon Highway west of Goondiwindi.

Three people have miraculously avoided serious injury after a train derailment caused by a collision with a truck in Queensland’s Goondiwindi Region.

The incident occurred at 1.37pm near Gooray station on Gooray Rd north of the Barwon Hwy, west of Goondiwindi.

The train reportedly hit the semi trailer at a “notorious” corner according to Toobeah publican Mick Offerdahl.

“The train hit the trailer [which was] pulling a low loader,” he said.

“The train struck the low loader below the neck of the trailer, jumped up and somehow that’s been enough to jump off the track.”

Mr Offerdahl said families living in the area had also been concerned about the crossing for years as it was on a school bus route.

“That corner is notoriously dangerous,” he said. “You sort of end up on the tracks before you can see down the track.

“The driver was not from the area. I have carted a heap of grain down that road and am surprised it hasn’t happened before.”

A QFES spokeswoman said there were three crews on scene, the first having arrived at 1:50pm, with another en route.

She said crews were working to make the scene safe, with fuel leaking from the truck.

Three adult male patients were driven to Goondiwindi Hospital in stable conditions with minor injuries including bumps, pains and lacerations.

Mr Offerdahl said the crash will cause disruption to the locals who are midway through the sorghum grain and cotton harvest as well as planting this year’s winter crop.

“But it is a grain truck operator’s win, which is good for the Goondiwindi community with its large base of transport operators and associated businesses,” he said.

The train has been left a mangled wreck.

Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor Lawrence Springborg said it was likely the train wreckage would take days to clean up, and thus cause significant disruptions in the transport of grain supplies out of the Goondiwindi region.
