The next batch of Sunshine Coast rugby union stars are eager to create their own slice of history as the official countdown begins to the 2025 South Queensland Championships.
This year's tournament will be held in Surfers Paradise from May 30 to June 1.
Prior to it all we caught up with head coaches Ryan Frisby (men’s) and Darren Tahu (women’s) to get the complete rundown on how their squads were shaping up.
Open Men’s
After spending six seasons as the Stingrays Colts head coach, Ryan Frisby will return as the Stingray’s open men’s head coach for his second straight year.
Frisby will be accompanied by Wilson Enoka (Caboolture) and Sam Miller (USC) as assistant coaches and Scott Harper (Caloundra) as team manager.
The 25 -man squad will compete at the South Queensland Championships where they will play Gold Coast and Darling Downs before a South Queensland team is selected.
With just four training sessions between now and the tournament on May 30, Frisby said he was eager for the coming weeks.
“At the end of last year a lot of talent came to the Sunshine Coast or relocated back home from Brisbane, Gold Coast, New Zealand and even the UK which has only strengthened each club and the overall talent pool,” he said.
“Add to that their extra work in the off-season plus the type of lifestyle they live on the Sunshine Coast, it’s a very exciting team and the energy will be really positive.”
University lead the charge with seven players selected followed by Caloundra and Noosa (6), Maroochydore (4) and Brothers (2).
Squad additions include former Wallaby and Sunshine Coast junior Blake Enever while 11 other players have previously represented the Queensland Country Heelers team.
“Sometimes it is easy to pick a team but we’ve had to leave some quality players out and I think a lot of people will be surprised in which names missed out,” Frisby said.
“Final selections were so close we spent an extra hour at the coaching table deciding which player to take but we’re happy with the final squad and congratulations to those players picked.”

Open Women’s
With plenty of strong representation in the female space, the Stingrays will roll into the tournament with a heavy target on their back.
Current Brothers A-Grade head coach Darren Tahu has taken the reins of the women’s side for the first time.
“The squad is a really good representation of the competition at the moment,” Tahu said.
“A bulk of the squad comes from the top performing clubs so our selections almost naturally fell into that representation. “
Tahu said he was extremely pleased and excited to see what his side could achieve.
“We’ve picked some very experienced players this year which only adds to the mix of our squad with plenty of talented youth players rising through the grades,” he said.
“Our forward pack will be very strong before letting our exciting backs show what they can do with flair, speed and skill.
“We’re feeling really confident, I think it’s one of the better teams picked in the last couple of years so I’m looking forward to seeing how they go.”
