The Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to cancel this year’s New Year’s Eve midnight fireworks at Mooloolaba has ignited a wave of criticism, both locally and nationally, with concerns about its impact on tourism and the local economy.

Sunshine Coast Business Council chairwoman Sandy Zubrinich expressed her disappointment, highlighting a segment on Fox’s The Late Debate that criticised the cancellation.

“This is a wake-up call for our council,” Ms Zubrinich said.

“When a national media outlet is highlighting basic shortcomings, it damages our reputation and our ability to attract visitors.

“Cancelling one of our most iconic events only compounds the issue and sends the wrong message about our commitment to supporting tourism and local businesses.”

She said the annual event had become a drawcard during the festive season.

Sunshine Coast Business Council chair, Sandy Zubrinich, said recent media coverage surrounding the cancellation of midnight fireworks in the Sunshine Coast is a “wake-up call” for council.

Ms Zubrinich warned the decision could have long-term economic consequences, describing it as “shortsighted”.

She urged locals, businesses, and visitors to voice their concerns to the council to advocate for the tradition’s reinstatement.

In a press release by the Sunshine Coast Business Council, it noted that Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli was also “extremely disappointed” by the decision, attributing it to the previous council and promising a review for 2026.

Ms Natoli said ratepayers wanted the council to be “financially responsible”, adding the midnight display was set to cost $340,000.

“I personally am disappointed that there won’t be fireworks at midnight in Mooloolaba this year. I attend every year,” Ms Natoli said.

“It is a decision made in January by the last council – considering safety, costs, the environment and the fact Mooloolaba foreshore was expected to be under construction.”

The council has launched an online survey about the issue.

The cancellation sparked a heated debate on social media, with many residents responding to a Sunshine Coast Daily Facebook post voicing their own views on the matter.

Desley Ellison said it was “the worst decision”.

“Why spoil the fun of so many?” Ms Ellison said.

Others suggested alternatives, such as drone or laser shows, to address environmental and animal welfare concerns.

The council’s survey on the festive season program is open until December 6, allowing locals to weigh in on the future of the region’s New Year celebrations.
